HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR HOME TO A CHARGING STATION FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE
That will depend on a few factors. 1) Which EVSE (charger) you buy (a hardwired one or a plug in one), 2) what state your current electrical system is in (do you have a 100 amp or 200 amp panel, and how many open slots do you have in it), and 3) how far from the panel your EVSE is to be installed.
If you’re using the 110V cable that comes with the car, then it’s simply a matter of plugging it into any 15 amp 110v outlet in your house. Basically free at that point.
If you’re using a 220V EVSE, then the cost can range from $300–500 for the EVSE itself, and then anywhere from $100–1000 for the wiring depending on i your using a standard 220V outlet or a hardwired one or if your near the panel or 50 ft away.
And of course if you have a full 100amp panel, you might have to upgrade to a 200 amp service to get enough free slots to install the EVSE. But that’s always a good idea anyhow as it adds value to the house and future proofs the home. I had done that to my 1932 home back in 2007 to future proof the house and let me add things like more power in the garage for a compressor and adding a hot tub out back. So when it came time to add an EV charger, it was merely a simple 50 foot run from the panel in the basement to the front of the garage. So mine cost me $780 for the charger and the run, and my local electrical company gave me a $750 rebate to have it installed on the outside of my garage:
Why on the outside? Because my project cars and convertible live in the garage and the EV daily drivers are outside.
